The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is the world's leading resource for conservation, research, education, and citizen science focused on birds. The Lab is a vibrant unit within Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), where twelve world-class, mission-driven programs are directed by full-time faculty and other renowned professionals. The Information Science and Technology program currently manages the Birds of North America (BNA) and Neotropical Birds (NB): two scholarly resources that present up-to-date life history monographs on the birds of the Americas. BNA is a living monograph series covering all breeding birds in the United States and Canada, including Hawaii. This dynamic resource is the work of hundreds of authors and collaborators, and stands as the single best reference on the life histories of North American birds. With a growing base of more than 3500 retail and 400 institutional subscribers, the BNA represents an important revenue stream for IS&T and the Lab. NB is a mission-critical free online resource, which provides a platform for researchers and Neotropical ornithologists to publish primary and secondary information on birds of the Neotropics. Together these online publications cover roughly 4000 bird species, and represent two of the most important modern ornithological resources available globally. These ‘living’ scholarly life history monographs are a critical resource for both professional ornithologists and birders, as well as a key reference series for researchers and academics worldwide. Moving forward, we plan to expand our offerings for bird species monographs, to cover all the world's birds. IS&T's JAGuar content management infrastructure supports the development, distribution, and sales of these resources, as well as being used more broadly by the Lab's digital publications infrastructure, now storing and serving content for the Merlin and All About Birds projects.

The Lab of Ornithology is currently seeking a Digital Publications Marketing Manager. Specific duties include:
Development and administration of successful marketing/sales campaigns for IS&T's digital publications including pricing strategies.
Strategize about how our services fit together from a marketing perspective and develop the best packages for prospective customers.
Collaborate with digital publications editors to identify and actively solicit potential customers from the academic library, federal agency and non-governmental organization markets.
Increase number of individual subscriptions base in the public sector and identify and develop subscription-based initiatives with marketing partners.
Market IS&T's existing digital assets (such as eBird and the Macaulay Library media collection) in novel ways to provide site-specific content for potential customers, including government agencies, protected areas shareholders, and private businesses.
Partner with the Director, Assistant Director, project managers and technical staff of Information Science, to understand the features and intricacies of the products/services.
Identify potential customers/clients from the academic, not-for-profit, and public sectors, and close sales.
Provide regular market perception/feedback to Director and Assistant Director of IS.
Provide Customer Service support for both Institutional and Retail subscribers.
This is a 2-year term appointment with potential renewal.

BA/BS in Marketing, communication, business or related disciplines; 5-7 years equivalent work experience in an academic library, scholarly publishing, or conservation environment.
Excellent interpersonal, and negotiation skills required.
Excellent customer service skills and demonstrated ability to communicate with a broad range of people is essential.
Ability to interact with all levels of internal and external customers.
Familiarity with market research techniques and experience developing/implementing product marketing strategies.
Successful history of closing sales.
Solid execution skills with proven skills in project management and coordination.
Able to work quickly and effectively under pressure, use judgment in accomplishing tasks that are urgent; balance conflicting priorities, and make decisions from a range of choices.
Strong working knowledge of information technologies, both hardware and software.
Prior knowledge of birds and bird behavior.
Must be interested in and willing to ‘talk birding’ with clients and customers.
Must be able to work independently.
Flexible and open to change, focused and driven.
Able to change direction quickly.
Must have the ability to multi-task and prioritize.
Ability to work well with others while creating a high-quality and respectful work environment.
Must be willing to travel occasionally.
Experience with the Non-governmental Organizations (NGO) and not-for-profit markets strongly preferred.
Experience with digital publications and e-commerce preferred, and prior experience in contract negotiation helpful.
